Turning points

Nelson Mandela

1- When his father died, Mandela  groomed for becoming chief of his local tribe.
2- Whilst at university became increasingly aware of the unjust nature of South African Society.
3-  became involved in politics. was able to finish his degree and qualified as a Lawyer.
4-  Mandela and Tambo opened the first Black Law firm in South Africa.
5-  helped found the ANC Youth League.
6-  was instrumental in pushing the ANC  into more direct action
7-  had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Robben Island prison.
8-  release .
9-  was President until June
10- as president.
11- has continued to be an international figure of great stature.
12- was awarded the Nobel Peace Prizejointly with F.W. De Klerk


Achievements:
1- He was inaugurated as the first democratically elected State President of South Africa.

2- He was one of the few politicians who have gone beyond a political role;
3- He was widely admired and has received many prestigious awards.
4- He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Margaret Elizabeth (Marge) Tucker
1904 - 1996
1904 born Warrangesda Mission, New South Wales
1917 removed from family and sent to Cootamundra Girls Home
1930s campaigns with William Cooper, Doug Nicholls and Bill Onus
1932 co-founder of Australian Aborigines League
1938 on Victorian woman at "Day of Mourning" protest in Sydney
1963 co-founder United Aboriginal & Islander Womens Council
1964 first woman appointed to Victorian Aborigines Welfare Board
1968 awarded and OBE
1996 died

A time line for Nelson Mandela

1918-was born near Umtata
1918-became increasingly aware of the unjust nature of South African Society.
1944- helped found the ANC Youth League.
1950- was charged with treason
1952- opened the first Black Law firm in South Africa.
1962- had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Robben Island prison. 44- helped found the ANC Youth League
1990- release. 
1993 Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prizejointly with F.W. De Klerk
1994 -was inaugurated as the first democratically elected State President of South Africa. 
1999-was President.



Complete a time line for Fred Hollows


1929-  born in New Zealand
1965-  head of the Eye Department at a Sydney hospital.
1970- he helped launch a national program to attack eye disease in Aboriginal Australians
1980- was travelling all over the world to help set up eye health programs in developing countries
1989 - knew he wouldn't live to see all his ideas happen. He was dying of cancer
1993-died at home surrounded by his friends, his wife Gabi and their five children.
